While trains serve stations in the town, Braintree by the modern-day A131 and A120 is bypassed, at the Branch Line of Braintree's end. In the Domesday Book, Braintree was called 'Brantry' and 'Branchetreu'. Before running through Braintree, Pod's Brook becomes the River Brain.

Celebrate its 150-year anniversary in 2013, this building that is Grade II listed and built in 1863 was bequeathed by George Courtald and family to Braintree citizens. For the 2018/19 season, Braintree Town FC will compete at the top tier of non-league football. At different venues, Greyhound racing in Braintree was held at Cressing from 1967, at Coggeshall from 1930-1932 and at Notley during 1932.

Edith Borthwick School is a school that Braintree has. Around the main Braintree town area, there are various industrial centres including off Pod's Brook Lane, the Broomhills Industrial Estate, Park Drive Industrial Estate, and Springwood Industrial Estate. Next to the shopping area of Freeport, Braintree Freeport and Braintree include railway stations that Braintree has.

Where Braintree Branch Line joins Great Eastern Main Line to London Liverpool Street, trains depart from Braintree station to Witham. Built as early as 1848, the Braintree station was a building of timber frame, but it was later removed when the station that is Victorian (named the station of Braintree and Bocking) we see as a station that has two platforms was built in 1869.

Black Notley, Bocking, (a recent construction) Great Notley Garden Village, White Notley, Felsted, Cressing, Panfield and Rayne include villages in Braintree. With France's Pierrefitte-sur-Seine, Braintree is twinned and gives its name to the United States' Braintree, Vermont, and Braintree, Massachusetts. Remembered at the Museum of Braintree and in the Warner Textile Archive is the town's influence on the textile weaving industry.

Providing men in the armed forces of Britain for battle, Braintree played its part during World War II, but recruiting women into the munitions work of the town or Crittalls' engineering works. On Notley High School, in 2009 the Arts Theatre of Braintree opened. Known as "The Iron", Braintree Town Football Club were promoted to the Conference South as champions of Isthmian League in 2006.
